Midterms? It's More Fun When You Know the Questions and the Answers Beforehand!

A famous teacher once remarked- my objective during the term is to help the students learn the answers to the questions.

One of the differentiating advantages of the Vcoach Hypermarketing class is that midterm exams are objective, multiple-choice questions made by the students, for students, and posted on-line before the exam. Where else can you find that?

These approach removes all subjectivity, bias, and the torture of deciphering handwritten answers to essays. It also allows instant feedback to the student.

But the key benefit from this innovation is that it strongly encourages students to study for the exam rather than use common sense and good luck in answering the questions. With the grading system on a relativity scale, there is no way for those who don't study to score higher than those who do prepare.

Here are 3 midterm exams that were previously given, and which provide some of the questions for future exams. Click and learn!

Time After Time- The Business Value of On Time Performance

Ever been late? Of course. Who hasn't.

But, are you late most of the time. Then you will have a problem in the real world. Are you willing to pay the penalties for tardiness?

The other side of the coin is, what are the rewards for being first among equals?

Stephen Covey called it the law of the farm. He also referred to the ineffectiveness of the cram.

The following min-lecture is a must for MBA students planning to move ahead. You can't move  ahead if you are late.

HYPERMARKETING CLASS POLICIES

Applying the business value of time principle, here is the current traffic light system of scoring assignments, with a strong emphasis on prompt submission.

Impact of Time of Submission on Grades for Assignments:
1.     Blue (highest possible grade is 4, submitted before Thursday, 11:59 pm),
2.     Green (missed blue deadline but submitted before Friday, 6 pm, highest possible grade is 3.5),
3.     Yellow (missed green deadline but submitted before Sunday, 11:59pm or 72 hours after the original deadline, highest possible grade is 2.5)
4.     and Red (missed yellow, highest possible grade is 1.5 if submitted before the last class day)

What Grades Mean in Hypermarketing Class:
  • 4.0= Exceeded expectations and requirements , submitted before the deadline, Excellent Work
  • 3.0= Did exactly what was instructed/ required and submitted on time. No extra effort.
  • 2.0= Missed some of what was instructed, but met most of the essential requirements
  • 1.0= Fail. Did not submit on time (exceeded the yellow deadline). Did not meet the minimum requirements of the assignment.
Grading System:
  • 10 Seatworks/ Class Participation (20%),
  • 1 Midterms (30%),
  • 5     Assignments (50%)
Two (2)Ways to Fail this Course?
  1. Exceed 3 absences (although 4 may be reconsidered for exceptionally justifiable reasons),
  2. OR don’t submit  any 1 assignment by the the last day  of the course . Notice that failing the midterms is not a reason for failing the course. However, it does have a substantial (30%) effect on the grade.

For seatworks, pre-works and class participation, I am using TESTMOZ, an application which allows me to track your seatwork score, and the date and time you took the test.

The digital score tells it all. As GMA News puts it: Walang kinikilingan, walang kasinungalingan, Serbisyong totoo lamang. (Loosely translated: No biases, no lies, only real service)

Here is a the TESTMOZ test for this blogpost… Answer this only after reading the entire article…

You dont need to score 100% and you can take the TESTMOZ test a maximum of 3 times. When you answer the test, pls. put your name in the following format: class number, family name, first name. For example, if my student number was 8, then I would put the following on the student log-in: 8 De Ungria, Bong.

If you take the test multiple times, then I will only consider your last test (even if it is not the highest score).

Seatworks like this have a score of 0, 1% or 2%. Here's how to score:
  • 2%- Get a score of 80% and above, quiz taken on or before class starts at 6:35pm
  • 1%- Get a score of 20 to 60%, quiz taken on or before class starts at 635 pm
  • 1%- Get a score of 100% after the class has started but a maximum of 2 days after the end of the class
  • 0%- no credit for the seatwork regardless of score if submitted after 48 hours after the class starts.

We have 10 Seatworks with a maximum grade of 2% each or 20% of your grade in total. How you perform here is up to you.

Why seatworks? This is a measurable way to “encourage” students to do assigned tasks and readings before the start of the class.

UNBOUNDED VIRTUAL CLASSROOM

Welcome to the VCoach HYPERmarketing classroom with no walls and no time (but there are deadlines to keep)...

Here are other class policies and admin tasks that will make your hypermarketing experience truly productive and memorable…

1.    Be a friend of Bong de Ungria on Facebook  so I can add you in our v60 AGSB Hypermarketing Class group page and on Primus Interpares Online (PIPOL) .

2.    If you are concerned about privacy and confidentiality, you can create a  second account on Facebook and the other mandatory sites (like twitter, slideshare, blogspot, ) using a pseudonym or alias (ideally same initials as your real name and which you must share with me at the start of the class; for example if your real name is Juan Cruz, then your alias for the second account could be John Cross or Jim Croce).

3.    Be aware of your Assigned  Class Numbers ( a number between 1 to 40) , Groups ( a letter between A and F) and Group Seating Locations (somewhere in our classroom)

4.    Class Time policy: Be in the classroom by 6pm so that you can do the assigned seatwork before the official class starts at 6:35pm (You can do the seatwork way ahead of time as this will be posted on our class Facebook page). There will no longer be a 20 minute break as this is already incorporated in the start time of 6:35 pm (20 minute break + 15 minute seatwork).  You are encouraged to bring food and drink to the classroom (without making a mess pls) and to step out anytime for important calls (including nature calls).

5.    By 6 pm, the assigned group for the day is expected to turn on the projector to the Class Facebook page and also to the seatwork assignment web link.

Did you read, and understand this blogpost? Then prove it… Answer the seatwork test for this here…Remember, answer this only after reading the entire article…This is also an open notes test so you can have 2 windows open on your computer: one on the blogpost, and one on the test… It’s more fun when you know the answers…

Predicting the Future: 2012 Trends

If you knew only 1 right thing that is 100% sure about the future, you can be very, very rich.  Or, you could make a really significant impact that will change people's lives.

In a sci--fi movie, Paycheck, where the main character portrayed by Ben Affleck had the ability to travel through time, he needed only 1 information: next week's winnning lottery number. And he lived happily ever after.

In a more real application, if only our weather bureau, PAG-ASA or our  disastrous naitonal disaster council knew how much destruction typhoons like Sendong or Ondoy can produce and when, then so many lives could have been saved.

Predicting, or anticipating the future, is a must. Some well known futurologists are worth quoting:

*''"The future is not something we enter.  The future is something we create."'' --Leonard I. Sweet

*''"If you don't think about the future, you cannot have one."'' --John Golsworthy

*''"Never let the future disturb you.  You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present."'' --Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

*''"The best way to predict the future is to invent it."'' -Theodore Hook

*''"The only way you can predict the future is to build it."'' -Alan Kay

*''"The future belongs to those who prepare for it today."'' -Malcolm X

*''"Go for it now. The future is promised to no one."'' -Wayne Dyer
