Why Linked In?

I now require my MBA students to create and promote their Linked In profiles as part of the mandatory requirements for completing the Marketing Management course at the Ateneo Graduate School of Business.

In a way, this is a higher level version of the traditional "Introduce yourself to your classmates and to the professor" activity at the start of every class. A student recently asked why there was no formal introduction by coach on the first day of the trimester- this is why.

More importantly, this exercise is an immediate and practical application of marketing in the real world to the most important brand in the world for you - the brand with your name on it. So why not use effective marketing principles that we learn in class to promote your personal brand and get higher returns for doing so? Why confine your brand to the classroom when you can get a google result at the top of the google page with your name on it, for free?  Why let other people determine what others see on the web about you when you can have relative control over it (as my marketing class will learn later in the course, this is your brand identity- what you say to the world vs. brand image- what the world thinks of you).

Want proof? Do a google search of my family name- "de ungria", what do you see? Try other search engines- yahoo, bing, and what do you see? Then do a  google search for your "family name"  or even of your "whole name", and what do you get? I rest my case, or in this example, I rest my link...

Here's how to create an effective Linked In profile:

Hypermarketing2 MBA Students:
This is an example of a correct submission of this personal brand-building assignment.

This is a snapshot of the correct post.
Note the following key elements: (1) recent, smiling, colored picture (2) customized url or weblink (3) one word descriptor (“vcoach”) and (4) elevator speech. The details of what all these mean are in the explanatory powerpoint below (Creating the Professional You via Linked In)

Once you make your profile,  you have to do 4  things:

(1) post the url to Facebook page with the ff. link…
(To be able to post on this page, you have to apply as a member of the group)

(2) post a link to twitter with 2 hashtags #hypermarketing2   #linkedinatenista

(3) While in Linkedin, export the file as a pdf, then email the pdf to vcoach.serves@gmail.com. Here is a snapshot of how to export your profile as pdf. Simply click on the down arrow beside "Edit" as shown below.

(4) Post a comment by clicking on the following link:

This is the comment portion  at the bottom of this blog. Include the following elements in your comment: your name, your 1 word descriptor and elevator speech.

Here is how it looks:

Pls. follow the submission deadline as there is an automatic 0.5 grade deduction for late emails and posting. (The deduction increases over time!).

A lot of correct and incorrect examples are on the Primus InterPares Online page on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/groups/AteneoPIPOL/).

Here's why joining Linked In is a great idea.

What should be in your linked in profile?

Dear Marketing Management (Middle Managers) Friday Class

Welcome!

This is Prof. De Ungria. Unpredictable traffic conditions may cause me to be late. However, this does not limit what we can productively do in the 3 hours we have for class tonight since I will be on-line the whole class time of 6 to 9 pm. I will also be able to take phone calls thru my Globe duo landline 216-9743 and my Globe cellphone 0917-8571089 and thru email at vcoach.serves@gmail.com
This on-line class session will be highly interactive. I completed a Digital Marketing degree on-line so I know it works. Since our classroom has at least or 1 desktop computer with internet conection and since  some of the students bring a laptop or tablet to class, this should be a differently awesome experience.

So I know you are there in our classroom, can somebody pls. call or text me at my number or just post a comment on the v59 page?
I will send additional instructions in the course of our class through Facebook (FB)…

Building Visual Models

Transforming a marketing concept into a memorable image is probably the best way to learn and  master marketing. Here are tips for those who dare to dream and remember...

When One Equals Four

Graphics and colors look the same. What to choose?

What a difference 1 clear message makes...

In this case, 1 word. Marketers call it many names- USP, differentiator, brand DNA.

Below are screenshots from the official websites the day after the election.

The prize? 4 more years...

In the world of marketing, math laws dont exist. Here One Word Equals Four Years...

Personalize this- What's your 1 word that will move your brand forward for the next 20 years...

To Learn or Not to Learn Virtually?

Recent technological advancements have definitely made virtual learning closer to reality.

The advantages are: freedom from the constraints of a classroom, a professor, a shared time. The possibilities are endless. A not so perfect analogy of this are the advantages offered by the Apple Store that allows virtually anyone in the world to take advantage of knowledge faster, cheaper and better.

The disadvantages which need to be managed include- differences in the "techical savy" of students and definitely the lack of experience in such a limitless, boundless environment. It is hard to develop a virtual "personal touch" which can instantaenously respond differently to individualized needs, react to inequalities, align the learnings to  common objectives and understanding.

Midterms? It's More Fun When You Know the Questions and the Answers Beforehand!

A famous teacher once remarked- my objective during the term is to help the students learn the answers to the questions.

One of the differentiating advantages of the Vcoach Hypermarketing class is that midterm exams are objective, multiple-choice questions made by the students, for students, and posted on-line before the exam. Where else can you find that?

These approach removes all subjectivity, bias, and the torture of deciphering handwritten answers to essays. It also allows instant feedback to the student.

But the key benefit from this innovation is that it strongly encourages students to study for the exam rather than use common sense and good luck in answering the questions. With the grading system on a relativity scale, there is no way for those who don't study to score higher than those who do prepare.

Here are 3 midterm exams that were previously given, and which provide some of the questions for future exams. Click and learn!

Finally, hopefully, potentially the tipping point for a latent tourism giant...it is the Filipino that makes the difference... Mabuhay ang Pilipino!

Time After Time- The Business Value of On Time Performance

Ever been late? Of course. Who hasn't.

But, are you late most of the time. Then you will have a problem in the real world. Are you willing to pay the penalties for tardiness?

The other side of the coin is, what are the rewards for being first among equals?

Stephen Covey called it the law of the farm. He also referred to the ineffectiveness of the cram.

The following min-lecture is a must for MBA students planning to move ahead. You can't move  ahead if you are late.

MBA Marketing Assignment? More Fun When You're On Time...

Business Value of Time

HYPERMARKETING CLASS POLICIES

Applying the business value of time principle, here is the current traffic light system of scoring assignments, with a strong emphasis on prompt submission.

Impact of Time of Submission on Grades for Assignments:
1.     Blue (highest possible grade is 4, submitted before Thursday, 11:59 pm),
2.     Green (missed blue deadline but submitted before Friday, 6 pm, highest possible grade is 3.5),
3.     Yellow (missed green deadline but submitted before Sunday, 11:59pm or 72 hours after the original deadline, highest possible grade is 2.5)
4.     and Red (missed yellow, highest possible grade is 1.5 if submitted before the last class day)

What Grades Mean in Hypermarketing Class:
  • 4.0= Exceeded expectations and requirements , submitted before the deadline, Excellent Work
  • 3.0= Did exactly what was instructed/ required and submitted on time. No extra effort.
  • 2.0= Missed some of what was instructed, but met most of the essential requirements
  • 1.0= Fail. Did not submit on time (exceeded the yellow deadline). Did not meet the minimum requirements of the assignment.
Grading System:
  • 10 Seatworks/ Class Participation (20%),
  • 1 Midterms (30%),
  • 5     Assignments (50%)
Two (2)Ways to Fail this Course?
  1. Exceed 3 absences (although 4 may be reconsidered for exceptionally justifiable reasons),
  2. OR don’t submit  any 1 assignment by the the last day  of the course . Notice that failing the midterms is not a reason for failing the course. However, it does have a substantial (30%) effect on the grade.

For seatworks, pre-works and class participation, I am using TESTMOZ, an application which allows me to track your seatwork score, and the date and time you took the test.

The digital score tells it all. As GMA News puts it: Walang kinikilingan, walang kasinungalingan, Serbisyong totoo lamang. (Loosely translated: No biases, no lies, only real service)

Here is a the TESTMOZ test for this blogpost… Answer this only after reading the entire article…

You dont need to score 100% and you can take the TESTMOZ test a maximum of 3 times. When you answer the test, pls. put your name in the following format: class number, family name, first name. For example, if my student number was 8, then I would put the following on the student log-in: 8 De Ungria, Bong.

If you take the test multiple times, then I will only consider your last test (even if it is not the highest score).

Seatworks like this have a score of 0, 1% or 2%. Here's how to score:
  • 2%- Get a score of 80% and above, quiz taken on or before class starts at 6:35pm
  • 1%- Get a score of 20 to 60%, quiz taken on or before class starts at 635 pm
  • 1%- Get a score of 100% after the class has started but a maximum of 2 days after the end of the class
  • 0%- no credit for the seatwork regardless of score if submitted after 48 hours after the class starts.

We have 10 Seatworks with a maximum grade of 2% each or 20% of your grade in total. How you perform here is up to you.

Why seatworks? This is a measurable way to “encourage” students to do assigned tasks and readings before the start of the class.

UNBOUNDED VIRTUAL CLASSROOM

Welcome to the VCoach HYPERmarketing classroom with no walls and no time (but there are deadlines to keep)...

Here are other class policies and admin tasks that will make your hypermarketing experience truly productive and memorable…

1.    Be a friend of Bong de Ungria on Facebook  so I can add you in our v60 AGSB Hypermarketing Class group page and on Primus Interpares Online (PIPOL) .

2.    If you are concerned about privacy and confidentiality, you can create a  second account on Facebook and the other mandatory sites (like twitter, slideshare, blogspot, ) using a pseudonym or alias (ideally same initials as your real name and which you must share with me at the start of the class; for example if your real name is Juan Cruz, then your alias for the second account could be John Cross or Jim Croce).

3.    Be aware of your Assigned  Class Numbers ( a number between 1 to 40) , Groups ( a letter between A and F) and Group Seating Locations (somewhere in our classroom)

4.    Class Time policy: Be in the classroom by 6pm so that you can do the assigned seatwork before the official class starts at 6:35pm (You can do the seatwork way ahead of time as this will be posted on our class Facebook page). There will no longer be a 20 minute break as this is already incorporated in the start time of 6:35 pm (20 minute break + 15 minute seatwork).  You are encouraged to bring food and drink to the classroom (without making a mess pls) and to step out anytime for important calls (including nature calls).

5.    By 6 pm, the assigned group for the day is expected to turn on the projector to the Class Facebook page and also to the seatwork assignment web link.

Did you read, and understand this blogpost? Then prove it… Answer the seatwork test for this here…Remember, answer this only after reading the entire article…This is also an open notes test so you can have 2 windows open on your computer: one on the blogpost, and one on the test… It’s more fun when you know the answers…
