Why the Manny Pacquiao Brand Brings Home the Money

That Manny Pacquiao won over Joshus Clottey is not that difficult to answer to even an occasional boxing fan.  Nor will it be something that marketing or business students would learn from.

The bigger question is: why is the Pacman brand so popular that it is able to catch the interest of millions of people around the world, generate millions of PPV (pay per view) buys and a live audience of 50,994 people to watch it live?

What differentiates the Pacman brand from the thousands of other brands in the boxing world? Why does Pacquiao the brand bring home the money which others cant?

  1. Pacman brings home the money because he delights his customers instead of just satisfying them. Although he was way ahead in the Clottey fight and could have taken the safe way out and just coasted along till the end of the 12th, he tried his very best to still deliver a knockout because he knows that was what will delight his millions of fans. It was risky since Clottey could have sneaked in a knockout punch. But Manny the brand knew what people need, want and demand from his brand.

  2. I watched the event online. I was expecting it to end before the 9th round but it didn't. I think the most popular Pacman brand went up the ring, where i can say is a battleground between two well-known brands, and defended his brand. He did a great job. He studied his competitor, designed strategies for victory, prepared for the fight, and knew what his market share expects from him but he chose to play it safe throwing punch after punch -- more than 1,200 in all. At the end,he was able to defend his brand and is headed home $15 million richer. Hurray!

  3. Manny Pacquiao is a brand unto himself because he continuously works on improving his quality - that is bringing excitement boxing prowess, and he knows how to market himself. Pre event, when he landed in Dallas Texas in his own jet plane wiht a posse of 147 people just signifies to all how BIG he is now, this is excitement and creates waves of interest in him. His subsequent performance in the ring with 1200 punches, landing 1000 shows his bozing prowess and makes all the viewers root for him, love him, and idolize him. He shows courage in his fights and most importantly every celebrity who has met him says he is HUMBLE, and this retains his specialness. All these facets equate to him being a sports IDOL and increases his brand image and equity.

  4. As Time magazine neatly sums it up, Manny Pacquiao’s rise to fame and fortune has gone “from zero to hero.”

Manny Pacquiao is the only boxer in the world who won with lineal championship in four different weight classes (flyweight, featherweight, junior lightweight, and junior welterweight) He is also the first boxer in history to win seven world titles in seven different weight divisions.

Many boxing enthusiasts worldwide always awaits to see him fight in the ring with other world's greatest fighters because of the quality of fights he gave.

Even his opponents cannot believe in his power. After his fight with Cotto, Cotto said, “I didn’t know from where the punches were coming, Manny Pacquiao is one of the best boxers I ever fought.”

Though Pacman didn't bring Clottey down to a knockout, notice how Clottey protected himself till the end of 12th round.

Mara Ceguera, head for sales and marketing of Eurochemicals, Inc., says: "If Manny Pacquio were my brand, I would take advantage of the brand value already in place - particularly the fact that he has reached iconic status. I would trade on that and really promote him as an example of what one can achieve through focused determination, discipline, commitment, perseverance against the odds...etc. I would target him to young adults and children, who will be able to relate to him very much, but will also be moved by his story of success. As a brand, Manny Pacquio will be most effective in his ability to help alter the national psyche, or mindset, because he will make us all able to believe that we ARE capable of making it big if we are willing to put in the hard work required."

  5. Pacman is so popular because he always ensures that he delivers what the viewers want, a fight that brings excitement. Regardless if he wins by decision or knockout, a fight with Pacman is never dull. He always does everything what viewers expect from his end. Also, he’s an entertainer in and out of the ring…. As a brand that you’re buying, you’ll get what you want. He’s like some products it has on the label 100% pure. Pure boxing, no dirty antics and trash talking. Even so, he keeps on improving to exceed what the customers want.

  6. Pacman, the Man is a very popular Filipino brand in the boxing world around the globe, who made the first history ever to win 7 world titles. True to its name, boxing enthusiasts witnessed how Pacman collected the titles through the years, just like the Pacman in an online game through a maze eating dots with so much speed at the same time avoiding ghosts to reach the next stage or level. People from all walks of life are amazed of Pacman’s strength, skills and style of boxing, he got the Power . He not only brought home the bacon but most importantly, put once again the Philippines on the map that made one and every Filipino around the world, proud to be Pinoy! Pacman makes a difference, definitely outstanding, an icon.

  7. Pacman brings home the money since he follows the market trend everytime:

During the match, he gives his all yet maintains as a "Filipino" underdog. (unlike mexicans / americans who tend to badmouth - i.e. Mayweather, Marquez etc.) I believe this is the reason why even Americans love him and continue to support him.

After the match, when he is in the Philippines. He still plays THAT person who Filipinos can relate to. (karaoke, trying to speak fluent english, mapamilya as shown in his commercials - except his recent scandals of course)

At the end of the day, what I see in Pacman is really adapting to the market. giving the market what they want/need. in the american's case, a humble "underdog" (a person who belong in the 3rd world country) while to the Filipinos, a person who doesn't forget where his roots come from.

*on top of what was already mentioned like giving the people a good fight, making the Filipinos proud etc.

  8. The best pound for pound king never fails to excite his expectators. He had to do things the hard way and defy odds and silence critics time and time again to get to the point where he's at right now. Not to rest on what his opponent does during the fight, always have sensational performance on fights. Above monetary gate, he has a mindset of uniting the country as well, by exploits in boxing and influence in the Filipino people.

  9. Pacman is not an unknown brand for Philippines. He uses a personal touch to his people and is out there. In every day advertisement on TV or on buss for the soft drink. He has made people proud and letting them know there is someone out there letting the world know about their country. The quality of his works has improved not stopped. He is real and he has worked his way out there. He has not ended his brand to boxing but he has used the brand in everyday life of people.

  10. Manny Pacquiao (Pac-Man) is very popular around the world because he makes his country very proud of him. He is an eight-division world champion. The first in history to win ten world titles in eight different weight division and first boxer to win lineal championship in four different weight classes.

He is admired by many since Manny Pacquiao is not like the other boxers who talks bad things about their opponent. He is a humble person, he doesn't put his opponent down. He even says good things about them and wish them well.
He is promoted by the different sponsors of the product he endorse.

Also, Pac-Man brings home the money since he always win and this is not due to pure luck but just like every brand Manny Pacquaio also uses Marketing principle and concepts. In all his upcoming fight, Team Pacquaio carefully studies the competitors strenghts and weaknesses as well as his moves and strategies. They will create a game plan on how to counter-attact his opponent. They tremendously plan strategies which includes rigid training and food intake discipline. All this stages are being monitored not only by his trainor but by the media around the world, by that itself promotion of the brand is already happening.

Manny Pacquiao is indeed a great boxer in world history.

  11. Pac-man the brand is ALL the Filipino values wrapped into one (even the playboy part). He's an entertainer and he takes care to know his market in and outside of the boxing ring. He pleases the crowd's thirst for blood and glory, and more so when he brings home the belt for the Filipino (patriotism), while showing his faith (another Filipino trait).

His rags to riches story through hard work and perseverance is also a story that resonates with a lot of people, especially in these tough times. Once there is brand resonance, loyalty always follows through.

He is thus able to bring home the money as many people 1.) identify with him 2.) want to be like him 3.) admire him for overcoming adversary.

Everyone wants a Cinderella/fairy tale story. Pac-man and his endorsers know this.

  12. Pacquiao is a national pride to the Philippines as he has brought the best to them during the years and delivered more than their expectations. Everyone likes success and powerfulness and when they see someone owning that position and sharing it with them, that's when they feel close to him and try to follow his steps. That's exactly why other world class brand such as "head & shoulders" and "rexona" have engaged him in their ads to get closer to customers. That is how powerful this brand is to others.

  13. Pacquiao brings home the money because it is the prize of his pre-fight rigorous training and studying of his opponent's style, with the help of course by Freddie Roach. Pacquiao trains hard and listens to his coach Roach for the strategy he will use to outwit his opponent given he knew his skills and himself very well he can easily adjust to it when he is inside the ring and when to knocked his opponent down.

  14. The Pacquiao brand brings home the money because of his remarkable work ethics, every time Pacquiao has a scheduled bout, he trains harder than his previous fights. His dedication to the sport of boxing amazes the world. People are also interested on what Pacquiao would bring into the ring every time he fights, he continues to showcase different fight strategies - people want to see how much he has improved compared to his most recent fight. Pacquiao continues to re-invent himself. Pacquiao enters the ring not as a champion, he thinks of himself as the challenger - this makes him more motivated.

  15. Pacman brand is a well known top on the line boxer brand in the whole world. He is undefeated most of his fights and can stop crime rates on the Philippines every time he fights. All around the world, people believes in his strength because of his rigorous training and being a strong believer of God. He studies the strengths and weaknesses of the competitor and always have time during trainings. He always lives up to his word that what the fans wanted he managed to give it to them. Also he is a hero to most of the Filipinos because he achieve plenty of things in his life that no one had ever achieved. This makes him a World class boxer personally and professionally.

Pacquiao is a very unique brand. He brings home the money because he is a Filipino and only during his fights that different countries praise the Philippines because of his achievement. He also won many world championship belts. He is well known for his strong left punch that makes him a number one boxer. That makes many endorsement like Nike, Rexona and Head and Shoulders chose him to be the person endorsing their products. Makes everyone believes what he uses makes them a winner. That is Pacman brand.

  16. “PACMAN” is one of the most popular brands in the world for his triumphs in the boxing ring. What he does is very difficult and his life is at stake here. I guess this is the reason why people find him amazing and very interesting, he is strong, brave and inspiring. We all know his life story, from rags to riches and from nobody to somebody. Many people want to be like him.

We are one of the poorest countries in the world and many of us want lots of money like PACMAN. Pacquiao brings home so much money from his fights, and I think it is also a factor that draws people to him. No other boxers or celebrities for that matter can take home so much money that quickly like Manny.

Others may find this irrelevant, but I think the way he talks is also a reason why people like him, it is funny, unique and with so much conviction… YOU KNOW?

I think what separates Manny from any other brand are his strength, bravery, life story and the way people are mesmerized by his massive fists that knock out his opponents. The “HATAK” of his story and success can never be matched. Other brands use his success so he can carry them to the top.

  17. Manny Pacquiao is Manny Pacquiao. He doesn't just bring home the glory but also the money. This is because despite of his achievements and wealth in life, he still maintains to possess the qualities that are not common to famous athletes like being simple, humble and friendly.

In addition, his promoter was able to create good positioning and marketing strategy to promote the Pacquiao brand. Who would think that a boxer who came from the province of the Philppines and weighing just around 116 lbs when he started his career can climb up every weight class and bring down every opponent that he faced. The theme of every Pacquiao's fight was about him being the underdog because of he was always facing bigger and tougher opponents. In spite of that, his promoter and Team Pacquiao believed that his speed and power will be the keys for him to win seven world titles in seven weight divisions (which are now 8 when he defeated Margarito).

By having good attitude, superb achievements and the same theme of Pacman being the underdog, Pacquiao brand will never stop bringing home the money

  18. Pacquiao embodies excellence not just in sports but outside the ring as well. He consistently created an image of being of service to the poor and amazingly he is now a congressman. He also shows the great triumph from adversity. Coming from a poor family he was able to rise and claim all the fame and money that he deserves. Because of his background, many of the people are easily able to connect with him.

Pacquiao is not just a popular boxer but he is considered as a popular athlete. His name is recognized globally and even recognized by people outside the boxing community. He was able to become a global icon and that is why a lot of companies want to get him as their endorser. Prestige, visibility and marketability are all needed factors to create an amazing brand and all of these are present in Pacquiao. Pacquiao always has this hero like status in the country bringing pride in each of the Filipinos. His visibility is just astounding as he is present in most of the advertisements in TV or print. He is visible also in the show business as well as in the political field. Pacquiao has always been a person who is highly marketable with his friendly temperament.

Just like a brand that needs to evolve and to keep up with a very competitive market he was able to move up to different weight divisions facing bigger, stronger fighters and ending up crushing them.

And his legacy has been cemented by establishing records with his titles in different divisions and being the fighter of the decade. His brand will remain even longer than his lifetime. That is why there is so much value in the Pacquiao brand and he can command sums of money.

  19. Manny Pacquiao, for me, is the best boxer of his time. He’s an explosive boxer who could deliver a knock out blow to any opponent. He’s very good in using both hands. He combines speed, quickness, power, and foot work to get things done. Through the years, he was able to improve his defense with the help of his coach / trainer, Freddie Roach. Manny Pacquiao is a special athlete. He’s the Philippines’ most prized athlete. He just doesn’t get things done but he does it with flair – this is what separates Pacman from the rest of the boxers. Boxing fans want to see action. They want to see a competitive fight. They prefer the toe to toe kind of boxing. This is excitement. This is entertainment. This is what the fans are looking for. And this is what separates Pacman from the rest of the brands in the boxing world. Manny Pacquiao ducks no one unlike some boxer we know. He wants to fight the best because he is the best. Despite all his achievements in life (boxing, politics, etc), he remains to be humble – truly a role model for everyone. Pacquiao trains hard, studies his opponents, develops a game plan, and executes their strategy during fight night. Talent combined with the right strategy and supervision, the Manny Pacquiao brand never fails to bring home the money.

How can my brand bring home the money just like the Manny Pacquiao brand? 4 things. Number 1, keep on improving my brand – develop the brand, making it better every day. Innovate and adjust to the changes in the environment. Number 2, study the market. Study the competitors. Research. Number 3, develop a game plan / marketing strategy that would be effective in improving my brand. Number 4, execute with efficiency and with flair, giving clients more than what they need and expect.

  20. Manny Pacquiao brand brings home the money because he was very visible, made a good reputation and name, and has proven his boxing skills which is his product. All these factors kept the world to be interested at him. He made sure he has an admirable talent, he is kept well known, and likable by being humble.

I can be Manny Pacquiao brand by doing the same on my personal goals and attitude. It is always important to keep improving my self, my craft or profession. To be the best on what I do. Then, I have to make my self known, to be assertive on selling my self. If no one knows about me, my connections will not grow. And lastly, I have to be always to kind and humble, because no one wants to be around someone with a bad personality and attitude.

  21. Manny himself is best product, there is a very powerful thing infection with me. No Lose! He is very proud of who is him, and where is from. I am less to see that he got enough self-confidence when he speaks English, but, he totally self-confidence when he is in very boxing game. He is very respectful and friendly to his rival, and full of power to beat them down. No fear his best product.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I havent watched the fight, however Manny became sucessful because he know what he wants to do and he know who he is. He is not ashamed of where he came from. Actually he even capitalized that he came from rags to riches. He even marketed himself as what he is best known of which is a good fighter given good oppurtunies with his history tied up to him. Since he can own up to his world to be a good fighter, people are facinated of what he will do next.

  23. Mr. Pacquio has been a successful brand because he has portrayed himself as a hero of the masses and has always maintained this aura of David versus Goliath in most of his boxing matches.

This is the same with marketing, one must first define their target market, in Pacquio's case they are the sports viewers and the Filipino people.

People would also want to see the under dog to win and given his status of being a minority in the world stage, people gave more notice leaving them in awe and astonishment.

  24. Pacman is the idealized Filipino. His is a rags to riches story that any person can appreciate. Most of all, he remains a simple and humble man doing what he loves.

What seperates him from other boxers is the way he seeks to fight the best fighters around. He gives the people what they want, and what the people want is a great fight.

  25. I don't like boxing. It's not that I don't like seeing people get bloody noses, I just think boxing is boring.

But a Pacquiao match is an exception.

After winning match after match, people are curious if there’s anyone out there who can beat him. An amazing fighter and athlete, Pacquiao has proven that he not only has power and speed, but heart—a hero trait. More than this, his appeal to the masses is inspired by his success story- something most Filipinos can relate with.

The Pacquiao brand has also been successful because of nonstop marketing. His matches – from training to victory- have been exposed and promoted as a blockbuster movie.

  26. Apart from all the other answers stated above, I think the reason why the Pacquiao brand is so popular is because of Pacquiao's dependability.

You can depend on him to deliver an exciting fight. You can depend on him to show humility and class in the face of glory. And finally, you can depend on him to win.

It is this kind of dependability that draws more and more people to watch Pacquiao fight.

What I can take from the Pacquiao brand is that my personal brand must also be dependable to deliver the goods so I too can bring home the money.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Manny Pacquiao is his own brand because he has created his own identity and used it to his advantage. He has his own style, his looks, the way he talks, his fighting technique among others, which makes him unique and a very bankable boxer and endorser.

Though he has been a worldwide boxing sensation, not to mention filthy rich, we can still see the man he was 10 years ago, God-fearing, humble, and hardworking. Everytime he has a fight, he never fails to mention that he is proud to be a Filipino and that his glory is dedicated to God and the Filipino people.

Also, he mentioned in an interview that it doesn’t matter who he fights as long as he can give the people a good fight. It just shows that he is confident with himself that he is willing compete with anyone for everyone’s entertainment.

I can bring home the money just like Manny by banking on my strengths, improving my techniques and always adding a personal touch to anything I do.

  28. Why the Manny Pacquiao Brand Brings Home the Money
Literally Manny Pacquiao brand brings home the money because of his winnings on the ring and the accompanied millions of PPV (pay per view) buys and a live audience to watch it live. Behind of this success are the sacrifice, patience and determination on his trainings as the foundation for this accomplishment. People witnessed his boxing experience and dedication that serve as main selling proposition and patronized by the audience that brings home the money.

  29. “Manny Pacquiao” brand is popular because he delivers what boxing should be – “non-stop action violence”. He was never in a dull boxing match, instead, he participated in some of the best fights known to boxing.

Another thing about boxing, it is about being “the best of the best” fighter in the world. Again, Manny Pacquiao excelled in this because he confronted and won over the best fighters to the divisions that he fought – this made him the “pound-for-pound” king of boxing.

  30. Manny Pacquiao is a pride of Filipinos. What he showed to the world are exciting boxing, always improved skills and civilized actions. When Manny fights, there is always a truce — no fighting, no killing. He also feed poor, build school, etx. He always give filipino hope to peace and love. Filipinos trust him and take proud of him. The product is himself. His place is all over the world. He uses his actions to promote himself. And his price is reasonable. That's my opinion on why does Pacquiao the brand bring home the money which others cant?

  31. How can my brand bring home the money
    1. Should I start boxing to be popular?
    2. Should I join politics to be love and be loved? Or
    3. Should I quit studying and start training for boxing?

These are the questions that somehow entered my mind to be Manny Pacquiao but No, his name has always been glued with:

    1. fame
    2. humility, and
    3. wealth.

People are always been blinded with these 3 characteristics, something that can’t have or hard to achieve by many but with Manny Pacquaio it is innate on him to be a man of character, that’s why people wanted to be like him. He fights not just for himself but for the pride of the Filipino nation, showing that somehow even for one day we can be united and proud to shout of top of our lungs that I am a browned skin race with blood of rajahs, sultans and heroes that I am a Filipino; with a distinguishing characteristics be:

    1. Humble - like the saying "great things start from small beginnings"
    2. Proud of my origin - never ashamed of who are instead show them what you got and that you make a difference.
    3. Know and enhance your craft - practice, practice and practice.
    4. Feedback - do not be afraid to know your weakness it will make you stronger.
    5. Know your competition.

  32. Why is the Pacman brand so popular...?
One of the reasons why his fame is widely followed by the world is because of his great boxing skills. For Filipinos, there are several reasons.. some people watch his fights because they want to see him win (and win their own bets, of course); some watch in the hopes of seeing him lose; some watch just because everybody does it. Whatever the reason is, I think most (marginalized) Filipinos also look up to his story, mainly because they see him as an icon - a person whose got nothing, and eventually got everything (he can). I can say that he's a passionate person because he loves his craft, and he excels in it. In promoting my personal brand, I can also make my talents work for me by loving what I do in life, and making sure that I excel (if not do good) with everything I choose to do.
