No Ice and Unlimited Rice

When I order vendo-dispensed softdrinks from any fastfood chain, I cant help but make a special request of "no ice". Why? I can't let myself be robbed of 10% of the softdrink contents in exchange for relatively worthless ice. Why not? Because, even without the ice, the drink is really cold enough.

A chinese proverb goes something like this: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." Once upon a time I left a fastfood chain with  my empty soda cup with a lot of ice. Much wiser now, I leave with the softdrinks safe in my tummy and "no ice" on the cup.

I have heard this at least twice: Mang Inasal is being considered as a serious threat by Jollibbee. It will not be surprising if this is true as Mang Inasal came out of the blue in 2003 (or green as its brand colors go) to build as many as 263 stores as of today and aiming to have 500 stores by 2012.  (Source: http://www.manginasal.com/mi/about.html). To put Mang Inasal's phenomenal growth in perspective, McDonald's started in 1981 and has over 300 stores (http://www.mcdonalds.com.ph/). Jollibbee, the leader, started in 1978 and has over 600 local and 50 international stores (http://www.jollibee.com.ph/index.php?/about_us/contents/1).

What's the differentiator? Surprisingly, the battle is not on the chicken but on the "unlimited rice". This "eat all you can offer" on the rice has touched the hearts and stomachs of a lot of Filipinos. So, you dont have to be the best on everything, and perhaps the essential learning here is that you should be at least "unbeatable" on 1 thing.

So, what's your "no ice" (something you can do without) and "unlimited rice" (your competitive advantage which you absolutely can't live without).

Hypermarketing3 students: Pls. post your comments below.

  1. Interesting thought, I agree that Mang Inasal's competitive advantage lies not in their chicken but on the "unlimited rice"

As for my "no ice" something that I can do without is the soda itself, Recently I was able to enjoy dining out even without the cola, relating it to my professional career, Selling to my clients. I notice that my clients' "no ice" to me is the "inuman" that even without treating them to "inuman" or "lasingan" I was still able to turn them into my key accounts.

My "unlimited rice" to them is my unparalleled support and sincerity in serving them. I make it a point to go out my way in providing service to their needs even if it is not in my work description.

  2. My free ice is being open minded to change and being creative. I can't stop doing what I'm passionate about like a new comer with fresh energy. I think with this idea I am no ice but I'm not something like usual rice, I am a gourmet rice that is free.

  3. My unlimited rice is G.W.A.P.A. K.O. - Good Will and Peace Advocate Kaye Olivar and this can be done through my daily interactions in life, in my career as bank officer and in my personal life. Being G.W.A.P.A. K.O. must be reflected at all times.

My no ice is coffee, I can surpass a restless day even without drinking coffee. I can find the stimulant within to keep me going.

  4. I constantly challenge myself to become better in all aspects - whether it be in business, work, sports, family, etc. I try to learn from my mistakes, do what I can and leave the results to the Man above.

No Ice: Negativity and pessimism. I always try to look at the positives in every situation and have the "glass half-full" approach to things. I believe having an optimistic attitude makes your problems easier to bear and thus makes everyday living more purposeful and enjoyable.

  6. My Unlimited Rice is my passion about basketball. This has something to do with my personal brand as Sporty Joridan Paul Bautista. I am an avid fan of basketball since I was a child and I believe I will continue to spread my knowledge about basketball to my grandchildren.

My No Ice is the unnecessary things that I possess. I believe I can live happily even though these are not present. For me, these are just temporary happiness given to us that can vanish anytime.

  7. My "unlimited rice" is my work flexibility as a professional. Being a "Jack of all trade". I can be what I need to be in company. I have experienced almost all position in an organization. I've been part of different departments such as production, quality control, sales, customer service, supply chain, banking, a little of accounting and training. I have also excelled as a subordinate and as a superior, because I always believe on my self. I know when to be a leader and when to be a team player.

My no ice would have to be insincere conversations. Conversations does not have to be always technical or meaningful, but conversations always has to have sincerity. I would rather stay quiet than be in a conversation full of pretentions.

  8. My unlimited rice is believing that I can do anything with faith in myself and in God. I’m very optimistic in my daily tribulations – may it be at home, work, or school. This has a tremendous effect in my life. I’m very passionate with what I do and I believe that my unlimited rice is helps me end the day productively with a big smile on my face.

My no ice is dessert. I love sweets and I prefer to end every meal with something sweet. However, I can go about any day without having one and this would have no effect on how I go about my day. With dessert or no dessert, I can still be very productive.

  15. My “unlimited rice” is my interest and perseverance to learn new things. If not for this, I wouldn’t have learned and specialized on SEO and web marketing. I also wouldn’t have the determination to pursue a post-graduate degree as well as continuously research and learn new web marketing techniques.

On the other hand, my “no ice” are my worldly possessions. I believe I can still be happy and continue living my life without these luxuries as long as I have my loved ones around.

    > This would be my passion for success. I'm a natural perfectionist, but I know that life's not perfect.. so I'd make sure that in whatever I pursue in life, I will do everything I can to be the best, at least to be close to perfection. :)
    No ice
    > Negativity. I sometimes tend to look at things at the worst angle possible. But I'm working on eradicating this behavior. So I'd like to say that I can definitely live without it.

  18. My “no ice” is my addiction in TV series, watching it overnight without sleeping, and I’m enjoying it but it can live and survive without it. With this activity, my time for doing important tasks around me is lessened. This “addiction” of mine is simply for entertainment that’s why I considered it my “no ice” and without it, I can focus more on important tasks.
My “unlimited rice”, I’m very passionate and dedicated with my work. When there is a task given to me, like being the committee head in an event (eg. national convention), I work hard for it, being determined to finish the task even working on it overnight.

  19. My "unlimited rice " aside from baby Jasna, is my desire to learn new things. that is why my USP is Level up. I am a Learning & Venture Lover. Since high school I started engaging myself into short courses. I had a 7day charcoal painting class, I tried taekwondo, in college I attended dressmaking classes after school. I also enrolled in Ricky Reyes hair cutting school, and negoskwela computer networking classes. Now I'm taking my masters. Given a chance and the means, I plan to take culinary after MBA.

My "no ice" is my lack of interest in vices like cigarette. Aside from the smell that suffocates, I can't forget the experiment we had in college wherein it was shown how this vice affects our lungs. I also believe its waste of hard earned money.

  23. My “no ice” is my tendency of over-analyzing things or as they say, analysis paralysis. This is something I have been working on and I keep myself conscious about my tendencies to become one because I think this is unnecessary, as they say, choose you battle.

My “unlimited rice” is my daily dependence on God to give me the wisdom & strength to carry out my passion in life. Professionally, I can’t live without information, with my line of job, we even go beyond information, we get insights out of the available information to formulate strategies and communication plan. This is also why I have InSIGHTFuL as my one word descriptor.

  25. I would say that being "obsessive" to something or someone would be my "no ice". I've identified this negative behavior when I was in highschool in one of our class. I tend to "over focus" into something that catches my interest, that I sometimes neglect or forget other important tasks as well. I am currently working on this so that I'll be able to balance more my responsibilities.

Never in a day I would shut my mouth in mentoring/helping other people (unlimited rice), relying solely on the guidance from my Big Dad. Professionally, I can't live keeping what I know and learn within me, that's why I would love to share inputs to my colleagues and help them in their daily tasks (on top of my daily singing routine).

  26. Often, I can't drink a softdrink without ice. Yes, even if it is already cold. I feel like, with ice, it is cold enough for my own satisfaction. True, having ice on my ordered drink, means that I am short-changed, and that even if I think I am more satisfied, the truth is that it is my thirst who is not satisfied. In that effect, I think my "no ice" is watching tv when I'm supposed to be doing something else. Something I've already planned and needed to do. I just thought that I've rested enough, the truth is, I still have to do the task I'm supposed to do, which leaves me doing them at a later time, therefore not really satisfying my need to rest properly.

My unlimited rice or competitive advantage is the support that I get from the people around me. My husband, his parents, my family and my friends. They are always there to remind me my true value. This brings out all the best things in me, and that is my competitive advantage.

  27. In a fast digitized world they say that a cellphone has become a necessity, while I definitely agree to that, I can definitely go about my life without having the latest technological advancement these cellular phones manufacture year by year. It may not look like it, but I tend to optimize the usage of what I currently have. Assess my needs and purchase only what I need, I usually retaliate from replacing my cellular phone when I haven't use it to its full potential. Iphone5, no thank you.

Internet. Sorry mom and dad, I just couldn't see myself functioning in this day of age without the internet. No, internet is not just for p#rn, its a way a life, its a knowledge base, its a world in itself, its what defines this generation. If I can only put all the things you find in the internet in my mind, but then again no, so I make sure I know how to use the internet and how to understand and apply with proper discretion the things you see in the internet. It's my competitive advantage, give me an internet, I'll give you what you want, I'll do what you need. In my business, its unlimited internet.

  33. Life is very unpredictable, which makes me think that "no ice" can be completely defined. Time makes me let go of things I initially can't because that's how I learn and grow. At some point, life made me realized that my "no ice" are things that I need to let go of so that I can be a better person. My "unlimited rice" as a person in general maybe is my ability to adapt to changes and acceptance in things that I cannot control.
